The Third and the Mortal

7th September 2015

Meeting the original line-up of "The 3rd And The Mortal" in Trondheim 29.8. was a beautiful and nostalgic moment beyond words. Without this band and especially their 1994 "Tears Laid In Earth" - album Nightwish would not exist, and all of our lives would be very different.

Thank you Kari, Finn-Olav, Rune, Trond, Bernt & Geir. You are my heroes.

Tuomas has just released his debut solo single, ‘A Lifetime of Adventure’ from his highly anticipated upcoming album. The vocals on "A Lifetime of Adventure“ are done by Finnish singer Johanna Kurkela. The guitars were played by Finnish Jazz musician Mikko Iivanainen, whose wife Johanna did the backing vocals.

Video 'A Lifetime Of Adventure' released!

With the release of its debut single 'A Lifetime of Adventure' coming up on February 07, 2014, NIGHTWISH mastermind TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN has now revealed the official music video on the track.

The video was directed by Ville Lipiäinen and includes Mika Jussila's photos of Tuomas Holopainen and Don Rosa in the recording studio.

Commented TUOMAS:
"The director, Ville Lipiäinen, and me went through some options of how to approach the video and soon agreed to shoot a sort of 'making of' - clip of the song.
The idea of someone dressing up as Scrooge McDuck, and then filming him digging gold and riding an emu on an Australian desert felt just a tad corny.
Ville then followed us to London's Angel Studios and later Petrax Studios to film some shots from the orchestra-, vocal-, guitar-, and piano sessions.
The hero of the video is Don Rosa himself. His presence and facial expressions always put a big smile on my face. I hope you'll enjoy this adventure as much as we did!"

'A Lifetime of Adventure' is taken from the upcoming solo debut »The Life and Times of Scrooge« which will be out on April 11, 2014 via Nuclear Blast.
The cover artwork on both the single and the album is by Don Rosa, the illustrator of Disney's Duck characters.

'A Lifetime of Adventure' that is sung by Johanna Kurkela has already been out on the NIGHTWISH FanPOD tablet-computer app on 23 January 2014, two weeks before its world premiere.

About Scrooge

Tuomas Holopainen – the keyboardist and main songwriter of NIGHTWISH) has spent most

of the year 2013 writing and producing his solo album. The whole album will be based on a

graphic novel called »The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck«, written and illustrated by

Don Rosa.

Tuomas Holopainen comments: "This is my longtime dream come true, 14 years in the

making. And a homage to one of the best storytellers of our time. Thank you for sharing this

celebration of Life & Adventure!"

This 12 - chapter book tells the life story of a certain Scrooge McDuck, from his early years

in the 19th century Scotland to his adventures all around the world until the 1950's. The

story contains such immense depth, detail, wit and emotional power, that the moment

Tuomas read it nearly 20 years ago, it instantly became a story of profound personal interest

and love for him. The initial spark of 'coloring' this story with music, i.e. create a kind

of "soundtrack" for the book, came to him already in 1999, and has ever since been haunting

the back of his mind.

The album was written and produced by Tuomas Holopainen and will contain 10 songs, with

total duration of approximately 60 minutes. The music will be of soundtrack / classical / folk

genre in the vein of Vaughan Williams, Michael Nyman, James Newton Howard and Enya.

Mr. Pip Williams has done the orchestral arrangements, continuing his collaboration with

Tuomas after the NIGHTWISH records »Once«, »Dark Passion Play« & »Imaginaerum«.

There will be a number of guest musicians, including the London Orchestra, The Metro

Voices (a choir from London) and four lead vocalists: Alan Reid, Johanna Kurkela, Johanna

Iivanainen & Tony Kakko. Other guest appearances include Troy Donockley (uilleann pipes,

low whistles, bodhran), Mikko Iivanainen (guitars & banjo), Teho Majamäki (Didgeridoo),

Jon Burr (Harmonica) and Dermot Crehan in the solo violin.

The recordings took place during August - October 2013, first at Angel Studios, London, then

in various locations around Scotland and Finland.

The author of the book, Don Rosa, has done the artwork for the album.

There will also be a single release, from the track 'A Lifetime Of Adventure', and a music

video to go with it in early 2014.

The album »The Life And Times Of Scrooge« is scheduled for a release in April 2014.

Welcome Floor and Troy

Ms. Floor Jansen is a keeper.

Also, we will be a six-piece band from now on, as Mr. Troy Donockley (uilleann pipes, low whistles, vocals) will become
a full-time member of Nightwish.

Originally we were going to wait until 2014 to make a decision about the future line-up of the band, but the past year has clearly shown us that Floor and Troy are perfect matching pieces to our puzzle, and we are really grateful of the bond that has grown between all of us. We love you guys.

"Words cannot describe what I feel!

This union is beyond everything and I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to continue this amazing journey with my new brothers!
Once I had a dream…and this is it!!! "

- Floor

"The IMAGINAERUM World Tour was a revelation to me and in that time, I became aware of a growing unity and then, finally,
a transcendence of all the usual nonsense that affects bands. A beautiful process.

And since the idea, the musical dream that is NIGHTWISH has been a part of me since before I was born, I am delighted to
officially sail into uncharted waters with my brothers and sister. Wondrous scenes Ahoy! "

- Troy

The new line-up can be seen on the live / tour documentary DVD "Showtime, Storytime", released on November 29th.

Tuomas commences work on Scrooge

This week Tuomas started work on his 'Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck' project. He is entering what he calls his "hibernation period" for the next 3 month to write the songs. During this time he will also spend several weeks at a Disney park in America with his Keyboards in attempt to aid the creative process.

He commented that he is very excited to start this project which he has wanted to do for so many years.

Pip & Troy Will Work With Tuomas Again

Tuomas has confirmed with us that both Pip Williams and Troy Donockley will be featured on his solo album in 2013. Tuomas said that "We absolutely need pipes on it, because Mr Scrooge is from Scotland. So of course that means Troy wlil be on there." He then later mentioned the use of orchestral sections and that Mr Williams had confirmed to be happy to work on the project.

Tuomas expects to start writing the new album in early Spring and record in Summer of 2013.
